Rolf Movement®

Rolf Movement® aims to support recognition of habitual movement patterns that contribute to imbalance, inefficiency, or strain within the body. Rather than attempting to eliminate these patterns, which often develop as useful adaptations, the Rolf Movement® practitioner introduces alternative movement options that support greater ease, balance, and efficiency within the gravitational field.

Rolf Movement® utilizes a combination of verbal communication and physical touch to support awareness of internal body sensations and patterns of tension. Guiding awareness in this way permits the practitioner to support the release of tension patterns through words and touch, whilst also exploring sensations of ease and harmony in balance.

Once alternative easeful patterns have been internalized for simple tasks such as breathing and gentle movement, more complex movement activities based upon specific structures or tasks can be analyzed, where new possibilities of ease and authenticity await discovery. Typical movement activities range from standing, sitting, walking and running, through job or sport based movements to high level human performance.

Rolf Movement® helps to reorganize the structure and function of the body in order to support authentic movement and postural organization, which results in changes that occur without requiring ongoing cognitive control or thought to maintain them. Rolf Movement® is well suited for people who have completed a Rolfing® SI structural series, but it can also stand alone as an effective method for cultivating greater body awareness, coordination, and coherence in movement.
